Summer is an important time for students to gain important work experience to help them transition into a legal career. But externships for academic credit are different than just taking on a summer position. That is because externships are an academic course, which must meet ABA requirements and requires payment of 3 credits of tuition.
For most students, it does not make sense to pay summer tuition, in addition to their annual tuition, to earn summer credits. Additionally, many scholarships do not cover summer tuition. We do not want students to take out additional loans for summer tuition unless there is a compelling reason for them to do a summer externship course.
We offer a limited summer externship program, aimed at our part-time student population, who often cannot feasibly fit in an externship during the academic year, when they are already balancing a job and classes. For these students, summer may be the most flexible time for them to fit in an externship and meet their live client requirement.
In the summer, we generally offer one section of the Attorney Practice Externship course, which is capped at 15 students. If you need to earn summer externship credits, you should contact Prof. Lall in January to start planning and secure your spot. Advanced Externship credit may be available in the summer for students who are completing a second externship for credit.
Please note that the Judicial, Public Interest Lawyering, and the Corporate Counsel Externship courses are NOT offered in the summer semester.
