On April 7, over 200 judges, attorneys, social workers and other professionals attended the University of Baltimore School of Law Center for Families, Children and the Courts’ (CFCC) third annual Urban Child Symposium, "The Urban Child in the Child Welfare System: From Fracture to Fix."
In his keynote address, Shay Bilchik, professor and director of the Center for Juvenile Justice Reform at the Georgetown University Public Policy Institute and former CEO of the Child Welfare League of America, called for re-engaging families as part of the child welfare team and emphasized the importance of family-friendly public policies that aim to keep families together.
-The first panel, Appropriate Scope and Process of the Child Welfare System, was moderated by Barbara A. Babb, Associate Professor of Law and CFCC Director. Panelists included Brenda Donald, vice president of the Center for Effective Family Services and Systems at the Annie E. Casey Foundation; Mitchell Mirviss, Partner at Venable LLP; Howard Davidson, Director of the American Bar Association Center on Children and the Law; and Jane Spinak, Edward Ross Aranow clinical professor of law at Columbia Law School.
-The afternoon session featured two panels: Making the Child Welfare System Work and Straight Talk About the Child Welfare System: A Facilitated Discussion, which were moderated by Senior Fellows Gloria Danziger and Sharon Rubinstein, respectively.
